Into the Bird Territory- A visit to Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary

Entrance of the sanctuary

Before starting to write this blog, I would like to ask a question to people living in Kolkata or West Bengal. The question is..How many of you guys knew that a territory of birds existed among the territory of high risers? Well whenever we feel like watching wild animals and birds we visit the Alipore Zoo, but an entire territory of bird, an entire sanctuary of birds exists south of Kolkata near Ramkrishna Mission, Narendrapur. The place is named after the renowned sculptor, Chintamoni Kar and is situated just beside the house of Chintamoni Kar.

Location & Travelling

The sanctuary is located south of Kolkata. One has to take the Metro rail from any Metro Station in Kolkata and has to get down at Kavi Nazrul Station which is the Garia Bazar Station. From there board any auto or bus which travels to Baruipur and get down at RathTala Stoppage which is near Ramkrishna Mission, Narendrapur.

From Rathtala one has to take a road on the right and walk for few metres. First we will be crossing Chintamoni Kar's house and then we will reach the bird sanctuary which is few metres away from EM Bypass.

Inside the sanctuary

Small Hut near the entrance of the sanctuary

We entered the sanctuary at 11am and as we entered the sanctuary we were greeted by a small hut and beside that there was a road leading us to the jungle.

As we entered we were lucky to get a short glimpse of two birds, The Red Whiskered Bulbul and the Indian Male Koyel Bird.

Then we moved up the roads and we were greeted by few interested bird photographers. Some of them we tired of not finding something good.
On the road we found some interesting flora and fauna. Here's a glimpse of them.

Flowers of unknown plants

The above plant was found in abundance throughout the sanctuary. A bloomed picture is given below.

We also captured images of various tree trunks lying on the ground with this particular species of fungus growing on them.

After a brief encounter with unknown plants which were itchy as hell. We were ready to get some photos of birds again. The shots were difficult to take as the entire jungle is full of thick vegetation allowing very little sunlight to pass through.

Most of the roads inside the sanctuary is mud roads and were difficult to walk owing to thick jungle.

Inspite of being under Forest Department of India, the entire sanctuary was not that well maintained. The ponds were dried up and so few birds and water or winter birds visited the area. The sanctuary is also not having a website so knowing about the sanctuary is not possible. But apart from that we had a nice time there. Here is the different types of birds which are found there:
